About our company

Sherlock Funeral Service was established in Dorking in 1888, and is now a fifth generation family run business

The business of Sherlock & Sons originated from premises in West Street, Dorking where Thomas Henry Sherlock traded as a wheelwright and coach-builder before adding a funeral service in 1888.

Before moving into Dorking he learned his trade as a wheelwright from his father Thomas Sherlock who lived in Brockham.

When the funeral side of the business began, all transport was horse drawn and a glass car and brougham or coaches were supplied. A motorised hearse began to be used in the early 1920s and in 1932 a Silver Rolls Royce was purchased.

Sherlock & Sons used various sites in Dorking before moving to today’s South Street funeral home Trellis House in 1950. It was a year later that a purpose built Chapel seating up to 70 people was added.

In January 2010, Stoneman Funeral Service purchased Sherlock and Sons Funeral Directors in Dorking,  also an established family business that has been serving the community of Dorking and surrounding villages for over 100 years. The two families now work together and have matching hearses and limousines and a wealth of experience and local knowledge that is key to providing a first class funeral service.

In October 2012 Stoneman & Sherlock Funeral Service purchased a brand new fleet of Jaguar Hearses and Limousines all with matching number plates.  The new vehicles along with immaculate premises, staff and caring Funeral Directors make Stoneman & Sherlock Funeral Service an elite family run business. We provide a first class send off for your loved ones.
